The birth of tourism | Travel | The Guardian

The birth of tourism | Travel | The Guardian:

Photography played a key role in the birth of tourism - a pastime largely restricted to the upper middle classes in its early years. There a brief selection from some of the early pioneers here - including a couple by Francis Frith - who some consider to be the first professional travel photographer.

Somewhat strangely it contains no examples of Felice Beato's Yokohama photography from the late 19th century - which surely played a major role in forming western perceptions of Japan.
